Egypt, Russia emphasize Gaza ceasefire implementation, stability

(MENAFN) Egyptian and Russian top diplomats on Friday underlined the importance of fully implementing and maintaining the Gaza ceasefire agreement despite ongoing Israeli violations.

At a joint press conference in Cairo, Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty said Egypt is actively working to stabilize the ceasefire and ensure the delivery of humanitarian aid into Gaza.

He stressed the need to implement UN Security Council Resolution 2803 and to reopen the Rafah crossing in both directions.

Abdelatty also highlighted the strong bilateral ties between Cairo and Moscow, noting discussions with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov on strategic partnership and ways to expand trade. The two officials also addressed regional issues, including the situation in Sudan and efforts to de-escalate tensions.

Lavrov noted that trade between Russia and Egypt has recently risen by over 12% and emphasized that the two countries share common perspectives on many international matters.

He stressed that diplomatic efforts must continue to sustain the Gaza ceasefire, work toward a two-state solution, and calm tensions in the West Bank.

Lavrov also commended Egypt’s mediation between Iran and the International Atomic Energy Agency and praised Cairo’s “balanced” stance on the Ukraine crisis, suggesting that a settlement is possible once underlying causes are addressed.

Lavrov is in Egypt to participate in the second ministerial meeting of the Russia-Africa Partnership Forum, which brings together more than 50 African countries and regional organization leaders.
